Voices of the Ballroom
Vinyl Cover Design, Album Conceptualization, Custom Photography, Hand-done Typography
Everyone knows Madonna’s hit song “Vouge”, but not many people know where her inspiration came from. The 1970s –1990s New York City underground ballroom scene was a place where queer people of color were free to express themselves through dance. Voices of the Ballroom is filled with songs by the music icons of the ballroom like Diana Ross, Madonna, and Donna Summer. Original photography was shot for the cover with control of the art direction and styling of the model posed in a “voguing” dance position. To represent the music and the extravagant, colorful outfits worn during performances, CDs were cut up to create the title typography and a pattern that is incorporated throughout the design. Using the Cricut, spot iridescent stickers were added to the title letters on the front cover and to the disco ball on the back cover to bring the vinyl mockup to life.
